Environmental League of Massachusetts: The National Wildlife Federation's Affiliate of the Year
RESTON, Va. – This weekend, the National Wildlife Federation honored the Environmental League of Massachusetts with its Affiliate of the Year Award.
“When the history of the America’s clean energy revolution is written, the Environmental League of Massachusetts’ steadfast advocacy and grassroots mobilization will play a central role in the story,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “Since 1898, ELM has championed our land, our water and our health through innovative approaches and collaborative partnerships to create change on the ground. Their groundbreaking advocacy in 2016 of offshore wind lead to the largest commitment in the nation and created a powerful model for other states across the country—and we are proud they are part of the Federation family.”
The National Conservation Leadership Award recognizes a National Wildlife Federation affiliate organization for conservation accomplishments and contributions to collaborative efforts across the Federation. The award ceremony took place at the National Wildlife Federation’s annual meeting held at Skamania Lodge, in Stevenson, Washington.
The Environmental League of Massachusetts has worked closely with the National Wildlife Federation over the last few years on a campaign promoting offshore wind in Massachusetts. A law passed last summer mandates that electric utilities purchase a minimum of 1,600 MW of offshore wind power by 2027 – enough to power more than 20 percent of all homes in Massachusetts. ELM is working with the newly-formed Offshore Wind Coalition to continue to promote offshore wind power in Massachusetts.
"Offshore wind investments will boost the local economy, improve public health and protect wildlife and wild places," said Ken Pruitt, the Executive Director of the Environmental League of Massachusetts. "We are honored to have received this award from the National Wildlife Federation and to work with them on this critical effort."
