New Documentary Showcases NYC Climate Education Program, Offers Hopeful Perspective Towards Climate Resilience

NEW YORK, NY – In celebration of Climate Week 2023, a new documentary film titled "Where it Floods: Planting Hope in Coney Island," follows the journey of students from seven NYC middle and high schools as they learn about climate science, climate impacts and the natural and built solutions that increase climate resiliency in Coney Island. Filmed and produced by Driven Studio and narrated by a student, the film premieres on September 23 at Quad Cinema and includes a follow-up panel discussion with the students, teachers and community partners featured in the film.

“We’re very excited to share this film which showcases the impact that climate education programs like RiSC can have in our schools and frontline communities,” said Emily Fano, senior program manager for the Resilient Schools Consortium (RiSC) and one of the film’s co-producers. “Students and educators need resources to help them understand how the climate crisis is impacting their neighborhoods now, how it will impact them in the future, and how they can mitigate those impacts locally.”

For those interested in attending, the deadline to RSVP is September 16, 2023. Seats are allotted on a first come, first serve basis. Additional details include:

  • When: Saturday, September 23, from 1:45 pm to 3:30 pm. Doors open at 1:30.
  • Where: Quad Cinema, 34 West 13th Street in Manhattan between 5th and 6th Avenues.

The RiSC is a collaboration between the National Wildlife Federation, the Coney Island Beautification Project, the American Littoral Society, New York Sea Grant, advisors at the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay, Coney Island residents and seven NYC Department of Education middle and high schools. The mission of the program is to teach New York City middle and high school students and teachers about climate resilience, climate science, climate justice and community-led solutions.

For educators interested in learning more about climate education, join the Climate and Resilience Education Task Force for a virtual event on September 20th with Tom Roderick, author of “Teach for Climate Justice: A Vision for Transforming Education” (2023).
