A photographer catches an image of a chipmunk quenching its thirst
A COOL SIP SUSTAINS AN EASTERN CHIPMUNK—one of many creatures finding refuge in the 5-acre NWF Certified Wildlife Habitat® that Gary Carter nurtures at his home in McLeansville, North Carolina. Nature photographer Jason Hahn visited the site “to photograph songbirds,” he says, “but the chipmunks running around wound up stealing the show.” Carter knows this one by sight: “That’s Chip. He has a chip out of his ear.” The flaw adds further charm to this intimate portrait, which reflects water’s life-giving role for wildlife.A new storymap connects the dots between extreme weather and climate change and illustrates the harm these disasters inflict on communities and wildlife.
