In the United States, Black communities have been institutionally and systematically excluded from enjoying the outdoors and cultivating their relationship with nature. To this day, there are ongoing barriers that uphold that disconnect, from historical trauma to lack of access or affordability. The Transformational Tours of National Parks works to renew interest and passion in the Great Outdoors to rebuild those connections.
Earlier this year, the Environmental Justice, Health, and Community Resilience and Revitalization Program became a funder of the Transformational Tours of National Parks, an initiative led by Audrey Peterman of the Diverse Environmental Leaders Speakers Bureau that aims to promote National Parks among Black communities and encourage civic participation in conservation efforts.
Transformational Tours partners with the Hip-Hop Caucus, an environmental justice group that utilizes the cultural power of hip-hop, to bring social media influencers and environmental educators to various National Parks and historical sites to showcase their experiences on their platforms. By sharing the importance and wonders of public lands through content creators, the initiative works to grow interest and exposure to the public lands system through their large followings.
