Coastal Resilience | Mid-Atlantic

Flooding in Oxford, MDWith America’s coastlines increasingly impacted by more frequent flooding and more intense coastal storms, expanding our nation’s coastal resilience is critical now more than ever.

The Mid-Atlantic is one of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change such as sea level rise, high tide flooding, increases in precipitation, and rising temperatures.

The National Wildlife Federation has found success facilitating landscape-scale conservation efforts through convening and leading coalitions of on-the-ground practitioners, and by advancing Federal and State policies that support sustainable coastal management.

The National Wildlife Federation is working with communities on the front lines of climate change to implement nature-based solutions to storm surge and rising sea levels.

Why NWF?

The National Wildlife Federation is first and foremost a federation of state affiliates and coalitions. Since coastal habitats and coastal communities exist across highly fragmented management jurisdictions (Federal, regional, state, local, private-landowners), NWF’s structure uniquely positions us to bring together the necessary partners and stakeholders to create a more resilient environment and safer habitats for wildlife and humans.

NWF brings together on the  ground practitioners, management jurisdictions and non-traditional partners in order to:

          1. Coordinate the implementation of coastal restoration and policy at a landscape scale
          2. Engage cross-sector partners to achieve co-benefit outcomes
          3. Ensure equitable access to resources and outcomes

A key element of NWF’s coordination efforts depends on the Coastal Resiliency Growth Fund. The Fund allows NWF and our partners to grow the work through policy advocacy, working with under-resourced communities to develop strategies that maintain an environmental justice lens, and implement on-the-ground projects.

Projects

Across the Mid-Atlantic, our coasts are in need of protection. That’s why our staff are dedicated to leading and supporting projects with conservation partners to create more resilient coastlines with healthier habitats for wildlife.

Where We Work

More than one-third of U.S. fish and wildlife species are at risk of extinction in the coming decades. The National Wildlife Federation is on the ground in seven regions across the country, collaborating with 53 state and territory affiliates to reverse the crisis and ensure wildlife thrive.
